Questions and Answers
Q: What is Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0?
A: Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 is a plug-in for Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7, and is the first and one of the most advanced HDV NLE solutions in the market. In addition to the formats supported by the previous version, support for the HDV1080i format and Sony HDV1080i devices has been added in this version.
Q: Does Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 fully support HDV1080i format?
A: Yes. Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 allows you to capture, edit and encode HDV1080/60i and HDV1080/50i natively. Using this plug-in with Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7's MPEG editing engine, you can batch capture, edit, and apply filters and transitions on HDV1080i video just like you do with DV.
Q: What devices are supported by Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0?
A: HDV720p: JVC GR-HD1, JVC JY-HD10
DV1080i: Sony HDR-FX1, Sony HVR-Z1, Sony HVR-M10
Q: What's the basic difference between HDV720p and HDV1080i?
A: HDV720p: currently supported by JVC GR-HD1 and JVC JV-HD10.
The resolution is 1280x720.
DV1080i: currently supported by Sony HDR-FX1, Sony HVR-Z1 and Sony HVR-M10.
The resolution is 1440x1080.
Q: Do I need a new computer or new capture card for HDV1080i?
A: No. HDV1080i uses the same 25Mbps data rate and IEEE-1394 interface as DV. However, since HDV1080i has a much higher resolution and is in MPEG-2 long GOP format, you may experience choking on a normal PC which makes the video choppy.
Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7 with HD Plug-in 2.0 requires no additional add-on hardware. Using a PC with a 3.0 GHz CPU, 1GB DDR-400 RAM and single hard drive with 7200 rpm should be able to play one stream of HD video without dropping frames.
This standard type of PC setup is enough for basic video editing. If you add effects, you will probably experience dropped frames during playback/preview on such a system, however the rendered file will have no dropped frames. Simply upgrade your system with standard PC components to boost the performance.
Q: What are the recommended system requirements that will give a better performance when editing HDV1080i?
A: CPU: 3GHz CPU or above
Memory: 1GB DDR-400 or above
Hard Drive: SATA RAID (0, 1)
Display Card: PCI Express VGA card
Q: What's the key benefit of using Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0?
A: Quality. You get 100% quality when capturing, previewing and exporting video. We believe quality does matter, especially for users who adopt the HDV format. The whole process - from capturing, editing to encoding - is all done in MPEG-2, which is the native format of HDV. Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 captures directly to HDV without any intermediary conversion. This ensures that your videos are captured and encoded without any loss of quality.
Q: Can you tell me more about the plug-in's native editing feature and quality?
A: Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7 with HD Plug-in 2.0 features MPEG IBP editing to allow effective native editing and preservation of the true quality of HDV. Also, you can add transitions, filters, and titles to HDV just like you do with normal DV. You can also preview full-quality video on a second monitor if you have a dual-output VGA card.
Q: How about intermediary codecs? Some claim that using intermediary codecs can already produce good quality output.
A: It depends on how you define good quality. There are several intermediary codecs out there, for example, the codec from CineForm® (adopted by Adobe® Premiere® Pro and Sony® Vegas®) or DVCPro HD (adopted by Apple® Final Cut Pro® HD). The problem with intermediary solutions is that they require video encoding to be performed twice. Intermediary codes will first capture HDV from the source device and encode it to an intermediary format (Transport Stream), then you edit the video in that format. After editing, you need to encode the edited video back to the original format (Program Stream) again. Loss of quality is inevitable due to these two encoding processes.
On the other hand, Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 captures HDV directly as an MPEG-2 PS (Program Stream) file to preserve the footage at 100% quality. You can edit and preview the full-quality footage in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7. You can also benefit from MediaStudio Pro's SmartRender technology which ensures that only modified segments of your footage will be rendered. This not only ensures the video quality but also saves time.
Q: How about the audio format of HDV?
A: The audio format of HDV is MPEG-1 Audio Layer II with a bit rate of 384 Kbps. The audio track in HDV is captured in full quality by Ulead HD Plug-in 2.0 and can be natively edited in Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7.
Q: How do I capture video from an HDV camcorder or deck?
A: The same as you do with DV. MediaStudio Pro's Video Capture program will detect your HDV device automatically and allow you to view footage. You can control the device, preview the video, as well as capture or batch capture video from your HDV device.
Q: How do I output and share HDV?
A: HDV will eventually be delivered via Blu-Ray disc or HD-DVD in most cases.
Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are currently not fully ready yet, but you still have many other options for sharing HDV:
Output as native MPEG-2 PS (Program Stream) file.
This is the HDV native format. Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7 with HD Plug-in 2.0 is the only solution that allows you to capture, edit and output in native format.
Record it back to HDV device.
Transcode HDV video to MPEG-2 TS (Transport Stream) file and then record it back to the HDV device.
Share it in WMV-HD or DivX HD format.
Down convert it to SD and share it as DVD, DV or Beta.
